"Once in a blue moon"
New Year's Eve -
A bright full moon glowed in the evening sky and illuminated the ground
below as the annual New Year's Eve celebration got started at the Blue Mesa
clubhouse. Interestingly, it was the second full moon this month,
also known as a "blue moon". According to scientific
literature, a blue moon occurs about every two and a half years
(hence the expression "once in a blue moon"). The next time
we will have a "blue moon" on the last day of December will
be in the year 2028.
The bonfire was near full intensity as the pot luck dinner got started at
five o'clock. The flames leaped thirty feet and more into the night
sky. Onlookers needed to turn away from the heat periodically or
retreat a number of feet to tolerate the heat. The fire burned well
into the night and was still smoldering in the morning.
The clubhouse was a pleasant escape from the cold outdoor temperature. The
potluck dinner was well attended. There were many of the "regulars"
and also a number of new faces. The selection of food was good and
there were plenty of hot dishes and deserts. The crowd started
thinning out by eight o'clock and it is not believed anyone stayed
until the New Year arrived.
