Blue Mesa Quilters Raise Money for Local Library
By Brenda Davidson-Shaddox
The Lake City Library is the recipient of $525 raised in the annual Blue Mesa Quilt Raffle.
For six years talented quilters from the Blue Mesa Subdivision have held raffles on their handmade quilts to raise money for the Lake City Library and the Lake City Day Care Center.
Theme of this year's quilt is “Welcome to my Mountain Cabin” and consists of twenty-two “blocks” of eagles, bear, moose and other animals, birds and scenes depicting the motif. Seven of the nine Blue Mesa Stitch Club members volunteered their time to create the colorful 64 by 74 inch quilt.
Theme was decided and a pattern chosen last summer. Each participating quilter undertook at least one block, though most did two. In addition to working on the quilt during summer weekly meetings, members also worked on their assignments at home over winter months.
Once completed, the blocks were arranged between strips of deep green quilted in stitching designs of mountain flora and fauna. Borders in shade of brilliant purples and blues symbolize the splendor and
majesty of mountain peaks and skies, enhanced with fabric strips of moose and columbine.
The Stitch Club meets weekly during summer months at the Blue Mesa Subdivision Clubhouse to work on stitching techniques. More experienced quilters have shared their knowledge with newcomers interested in the art of quilting. The club consists of a total of nine members who participate in the sewing club at various times during the year.
Since the group organized they have completed a communal quilt each year and sold raffle tickets to raise money for donation to the Lake City beneficiaries.
The quilters already plan a second quilt for this summer that will be donated to the Day Care Center in September. The Center will raffle off the quilt in December.
Nancy Bowlin, Diana Lingenfelter, Tanya Koop, Diane Beard, Ruth Capen, June Deatherage, Carolyn Sillings, Betty Morris and Mary Hinson make up the Blue Mesa Stitch Club and undertake not only the beautiful quilt making but assume responsibility of seeing to the raffles and donations.
Blue Mesa resident Wayne Munster was this year's lucky winner of the quilt raffled off at the annual Blue Mesa Subdivision meeting on July 3rd.
